Basic objectives of library catalogue

What is the basic objectives of library catalogue?
The basic objectives of library catalogue were broadly described by ‘Charls Ammi Cartter’ in 1878. The objectives are,
1. To enable a person to find a book of which,

  • The Author;
  • The Title;
  • The Subject; is known.

2. To show what the library has,

  • By a given author;
  • On a given subject;
  • In a given kind of literature.

3. To assist in the choice of a book,

  • As it’s edition;
  • As to it’s character.
