Information Acquiring and Sharing

Kalaiappan V. (2011)

Kevin Rioux (2004) Information acquiring and sharing refers to a set of combined behaviours and processes in which an individual.

❖ Cognitively stores representations of other people’s information needs.

❖ Recalls those needs when acquiring (in various contexts) information of a particular type or quality

❖ Makes associations between the information that she/he has acquired and someone she/he know who s/he perceives to need or want this information.

❖ Shares this information in some way Rioux’s exploratory study is based on the information access and sharing in the internet environment. It stress that the information sharing is inevitable and necessary in the today’s networked environment because of the scarcity of available resources in one hand and junk of information available without precision is in another hand.

The need for information sharing and development of library networks:

In recent time the growth of multi-discipline’s and proliferation of more number of documents in different forms are the major reasons for library co-operation for sharing of information through networks environments. Kaul (1999) stated that “The voluminous growth of published documents in the recent past increasing cost of information sources, technological advancement that offer newer methods of information processing retrieval and dissemination are some of the factors which have made resource sharing a necessity. The library co-operation is a very old concept and it is a form of resource sharing. There are large instances of such co operation among library in the library literature”.

According to the Kaul point of view the information sharing is an integral part of library that is possible only by establishing an innovative networks among the libraries. The information seeking perception is not only confines with the four walls of a particular library. The emerging Technology facilitated lot of avenue to a user of a particular library to search and access not only the resources of his library but also other libraries resources globally. As such, every library should be exist in a library networks or a group of library networks. The enormous growth of library networks in developed countries are highly remarkable but the library networks in developing nation like India is in primitive stage or not existing in many parts of the country.
