About Library Association of Bangladesh:

The Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB) was founded in 1956 in Dhaka. Its mission is “to provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.” ‘LAB has a clear and succinct mission statement, all the activities the Association are supposed to match with the aims and objectives. Although the Association, from time to time changes its strategies, but the mission statement is very much generalized and has never been changed’.

Mission and Vision:
The mission of the Library Association of Bangladesh is to provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.
Publications of LAB:
Library Association of Bangladesh is a proud publisher of the oldest library and information science journal in Bangladesh named ‘The Eastern Librarian’ in 1966. It also started publishing popular Bangla news latter ‘Upattay’ since 1989. The association also published two bibliographies, a text book on Library science in Bangla.
 
Events:
The LAB organized a good number of seminars, conferences and symposiums out of which valuable recommendations and suggestions were given to the library authorities of the country for the development of library and librarianship in Bangladesh.
Membership system:
There are mainly two types of membership provision in LAB. One is life member and another is general member. Another is patron member those who want t patronize (financially). Those who are want to patronize  (financially) the association can be patron member. Both life member and general member enjoy the voting right and also enjoy different types of facilities provided by LAB. Now this have more than 2000 members.
Affiliation:
LAB secured its affiliation with IFLA (International Federation of Library Association and Institutions) and COMLA (Commonwealth Library Association).
LAB Council:
The council of the association consists of following members:
  •   i. A President
  •  ii. Vice President : 3
  • iii. General Secretary
  • iv. Assistant Secretary : 2
  • v. Treasurer
  • vi. Councilor : 9 (out of this one is reserved for Khulna, one for Chittagong, and one for Rajshahi.
Recommendations for smooth development for LAB:
LAB is a professional national body for promoting library related activities in Bangladesh. There are many limitations and problems, which impedes the gradual development of LAB. Some recommendation smooth development of LAB are:
  • The rank and status of librarians and information professionals should take necessary initiatives as far as possible. Because the proper development of LAB largely depends on the professional developments of library and information profession.
  • LAB should organized national and international seminars, conferences, symposiums and short trainings and so on. So that the members of LAB can communicate each other and enriched them with professional development.
  • LAB should make good relation with different Library Association of the world (e.g. ALA, LA, SLA) for the purpose of steam lining the professional development.
  • The management of LAB must be decisive.
  • LAB should open the door to all who are interested to join LAB as a patron.
  • Government should allocate sufficient fund
